Widely regarded as one of the most talented dance teams in the nation, the U of M POM squad has amassed an unprecedented 16 national titles. Also in 2012, the squad was chosen as Team USA to compete at the World Cheerleading Championships hosted by the International Cheer Union {recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the world governing body of Cheerleading & Performance Cheer (dance)}. As Team USA they received a silver medal in the hiphop division. The pom squad has placed in the top 4 of the hiphop division since the division started at UDA, as well as consecutive years as a D1A Pom finalist. On game days, the POM squad entertains Tiger Nation with a medley of intricately-choreographed routines, helping to energize and excite the crowds at U of M’s sporting events! Most recently, the Pom Squad and NEW Ambush Crew placed 3rd in hiphop and 1st in Game Day! The program has a longstanding record of success at competition on both the national and international levels.

Achievements 

  • The University of Memphis Pom Squad holds 16 national titles, including 9 consecutive titles from 1986-1994.

  • UDA National College Champions: 15 (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2021,2024)

  • NCA National College Champions: 1 (2000)

  • The team had been featured on ABC's Monday Night Football and made tour stops in New York City's Madison Square Garden, Spain, and Japan.

  • Selected to represent the United States in the International Cheer Union World as Team USA in 2012. 

  • Numerous Alumni have become professional dancers for the NFL, NBA, USFL, XFL, NHL, MLS, and backup dancers for artists such as Janet Jackson, Katy Perry, Pitbull, Jimi Jamison and more! 

  • The 1992 Memphis State University Pom Pom Squad was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. 

  • Alumni have become professional instructors, choreographers, dancers, and judges on an international level in Slovenia, China, Japan, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Chile, UK, Canada, Russia, Belarus, Finland, and Dominican Republic. 

  • National Champions in D1A Gameday (2024), Bronze Medalist in D1A Hiphop (2024) Silver Medalist in 2025 (Gameday)
